Registration of residence permit in EU countries. For many Ukrainians looking for safe places to live, Slovakia can be an interesting country due to its membership in the European Union, its proximity to Ukraine, and its relatively affordable cost of living. However, the process of obtaining a residence permit in this country has its own legal procedures and requirements that should be familiarized with.
Slovak legislation provides several main grounds for granting temporary or permanent residence permits to foreigners:
1. Employment in a Slovak company or opening your own business. In this case, it is necessary to have an employment contract or documents confirming plans to start a business.
2. Studying in higher educational institutions of Slovakia. Admission to an accredited university gives the right to obtain a residence permit for obtaining an education.
3. Family reunification with close relatives - husband/wife, minor children or parents who are already citizens of Slovakia or have a permanent residence permit.
4. Participation in the state Program for attracting investments through investments in real estate, job creation or contributions to the budget of Slovakia.
The procedure for obtaining a temporary residence permit begins with the submission of a petition to the Migration Office of the Border and Foreign Police for the future place of residence in Slovakia. For this, the following package of documents is required:
- Completed questionnaire of the established sample
- Valid foreign passport
- Documents confirming the reason for stay (contract, invitation to work, certificate of enrollment at a university)
- Certificate of criminal record
- Confirmation of residence in Slovakia
- Evidence of sufficient financial support
- Medical insurance
- Receipt for the payment of the administrative fee
After submitting the documents, they are carefully checked within 30-90 days. In the case of a positive decision, the applicant is issued a temporary resident card for a period of 1 to 5 years, depending on the reason. The registration fee is about 150-250 euros.
In order to obtain a permanent residence permit, it is necessary to live in Slovakia for at least 5 years on legal grounds, have stable income, no criminal record and continue to fulfill all conditions for stay.
It is worth noting separately the special temporary protection program for Ukrainians who were forced to leave Ukraine after February 24, 2022 due to Russia's military aggression. This program greatly simplifies the preparation of documents and provides additional social guarantees.
Violations of Slovak legislation, provision of unreliable information during registration, loss of a source of livelihood can be grounds for cancellation of a residence permit.
In general, the process of obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia is quite formalized and requires careful preparation of all necessary documents in accordance with current regulations. It is important to submit applications and documents in a timely manner to extend the validity period of permits. Contacting professional law firms specializing in migration issues can facilitate and speed up this procedure. Provided that all requirements are met, Ukrainians can legally live and work in a developed country of the European Union.
