Uniting for Ukraine: Navigating the Path to Residence in the USA
On April 21, 2022, President Biden announced the Unite for Ukraine program, a simplified initiative to provide Ukrainian citizens fleeing Russia's unprovoked war with the opportunity to come to the United States. This program is a testament to the US government's commitment to humanitarian assistance, complementing the efforts of European countries that provide permanent residence in the EU to our citizens in the European Union. There are countries where it is easy to go for permanent residence, but the USA requires more complex conditions.
Unity for Ukraine: Overview
Moving to another country for permanent residence is not an easy task. The Unite for Ukraine program offers displaced Ukrainian citizens and immediate family members the opportunity to temporarily remain in the United States for up to two years. To participate, Ukrainians must have a sponsor in the United States who agrees to provide financial support during their stay.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, beneficiaries must:
Lived in Ukraine immediately before the Russian invasion (until February 11, 2022) and were displaced as a result.
be a Ukrainian citizen with a valid Ukrainian passport (or a child named in the parents' passport), or a non-Ukrainian immediate family member of a Ukrainian citizen who is applying through the program.
Mother of a sponsor filing Form I-134 on her own behalf, certified as sufficient by USCIS.
Be fully vaccinated and follow other health requirements.
Pass biometric verification, background check and security check.
Children under 18 years of age must travel to the United States in the care and custody of a parent or legal guardian.
Legal assistance in obtaining residence in the USA
When considering moving to the United States under the Unite for Ukraine program, legal assistance is extremely important. An immigration lawyer can provide invaluable support throughout the process, ensuring that all requirements are met and increasing the likelihood of a successful application.
