The procedure for obtaining a residence permit in this country, as in other EU countries, is regulated by local laws and European directives. In this article, we will consider in detail how to obtain a residence permit in Greece.
Temporary protection in Greece
According to the European Union Council Directive 2001/55, temporary protection is granted to people who have been forced to leave their homes due to war or other extraordinary circumstances. In particular, the decision of the Council of the European Union dated March 4, 2022 establishes procedures for the mass influx of displaced persons from Ukraine.
Within 90 days, the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum of Greece will grant temporary protection for one year with the right to access legal employment and medical care.
Procedure for obtaining temporary protection
The procedure is free and includes the following stages:
Translation and verification of documents: Free interpretation services are provided during the first verification of documents and registration for obtaining a residence permit.
Obtaining temporary protection: A temporary residence permit is issued together with a tax number (ΑΦΜ) and a social security number (ΑΜΚΑ).
Registration on the platform
From March 28, 2022, a special platform for self-registration will be available on the website of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. After filling in personal data, you can make an appointment at one of the five regional offices

Registration instructions
Click on the "Enter request" button in the upper right corner.
Enter the contact email to receive the One Time Password (OTP).
Fill out the form in capital letters with details for up to 10 family members, including demographics, ID, education level and occupation.
Please indicate whether you have housing problems and whether you have a support network in Greece.
Select the point of registration and receipt of the Beneficiary of temporary protection card.
After completing the request, you will be assigned a date and time of arrival at the selected check-in point.
Options after the end of temporary protection
After the end of the period of temporary protection (March 4, 2025), there are the following options for legal stay in Greece:
Continuation of temporary protection: This decision is taken at EU level.
Application for international protection: This grants status for three years.
Transition to resident status: Under the new law, effective March 31, 2024, beneficiaries of temporary protection can apply for resident status until March 4, 2025, if they meet the requirements for a specific type of resident.
