Write-off of interest on loans to military personnel – how to apply for relief
Servicemen, reservists and conscripts have the legal right to write off interest on loans during a special period (martial law) in accordance with Part 15 of Article 14 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On Social and Legal Protection of Servicemen’. This means that interest, penalties and fines on consumer loans may be cancelled or reduced to zero from the moment of mobilisation.
Conditions for obtaining the benefit:
- Notification of the bank of the military personnel's status with supporting documents;
- Submission of a written application and a complete set of documents to the lender;
- Waiting for the bank's decision within 10 working days.

Military personnel are entitled to write off interest, fines and penalties on loans from the moment of mobilisation or service.

Interest paid after 24 February 2022 can be refunded by submitting a corresponding application to the bank with supporting documents.
How to obtain a write-off of interest on a loan for military personnel?
- Notify the bank of your service in writing, attaching the relevant documents (military ID, certificate, extract from the order).
- Submit confirmation of your status — certificate form 5, UBD certificate, extract or military ID card confirming the period of mobilisation or contract service.
- Receive the bank's decision — after confirmation, the bank must write off future charges and refund amounts already paid.
Refund of interest paid — step by step
- Determine your right to compensation for all interest, penalties and fines paid for the period after 24 February 2022.
- Prepare a package: copies of the loan agreement, payment slips, status documents.
- Submit a written application to the bank or financial institution requesting a refund.
If your request is denied, file a complaint or lawsuit through a lawyer to ensure that the interest on the loan is written off by a military court.
In which cases is the write-off of interest not applicable
- Does not apply to loans for the purchase of housing or cars — the state does not provide benefits for such products.
- The principal amount of the loan (the main debt) remains payable in accordance with the agreement.
Why you should exercise your right: advantages of legal support
- Maximum savings — practical examples show reductions of up to 50–60% and the return of tens of thousands of hryvnias.
- Protection of rights in court — in cases of refusal, banks are obliged to comply with the court's decision, but without specialists, this can take much longer.
- Simplified process — with a lawyer, you only need to submit the application once, and they will take care of the paperwork and monitor the bank's compliance with the deadlines.
