Медико-соціальна експертиза визначає ступінь обмеження життєдіяльності людини, причину, час настання, групу інвалідності, сприяє проведенню ефективних заходів щодо профілактики інвалідності, реабілітації інвалідів, пристосування їх до суспільного життя.Огляд громадян у МСЕК проводиться за місцем проживання або лікування за направленням відповідного лікувально-профілактичного закладу при пред’явленні паспорта чи іншого документа, що засвідчує особу. Хворого, який направляється на комісію, представляє лікар, який лікує, або голова лікарсько-консультаційної комісії лікувально-профілактичного закладу. Для вирішення соціальних питань запрошуються представники власника підприємства, установи, організації, де працює хворий, або уповноваженого ним органу та профспілкового комітету. Термін отримання групи від 1-6 місяців
