For many in Ukraine, having a personal garage is not just a convenience, but also a kind of status marker. However, most garages are located in cooperatives, which have a complex legal structure. Therefore, the privatization of the garage is a necessary step to protect the right of ownership of this property and own it on legal grounds.

Garage cooperatives often arose even in Soviet times on state lands. After Ukraine gained independence, a significant part of such plots were transferred to the communal ownership of cities and towns. Members of cooperatives actually only had the right to use garages, not full ownership.

1. Registration of the right to use the plot of land on which the garage is located by concluding a lease agreement with the owner of the land (usually the local council).
2. Carrying out a technical inventory to confirm the compliance of the garage with the standards and determine its parameters.
3. Submit documents for the privatization of a garage in a garage cooperative of ownership rights to the relevant body (most often BTI or TsNAP).
What documents are required to privatize a garage in a garage cooperative? To privatize the garage, you must provide a copy of the applicant's passport and identification code. It is necessary to have documents confirming the right to use the garage (lease agreement, decision to provide for use, etc.). It is important to provide the technical passport of the garage, issued by the technical inventory organization. To register the land under the garage, an extract from the State Land Cadastre about the land plot is required. It is necessary to provide a certificate on the absence of arrears for the payment of membership fees in the garage cooperative. A decision of the general meeting of the members of the cooperative on granting permission to privatize the garage is required. It is necessary to have a cadastral plan of the land plot under the garage. It is important to provide an extract from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs about the garage cooperative. An administrative fee must be paid for the official registration of ownership. In some cases, the notarized consent of the co-owners of the garage (if available) may be required.

Advantages of garage privatization
Converting a garage into private property has a number of important advantages:
- Provides a full ownership right that can be inherited, sold, gifted or transferred to other persons.
- A privatized garage becomes a real estate object that can be used as collateral for loans.
- The owner independently disposes of the garage without coordination with the cooperative.
- In case of liquidation of the cooperative, the privatized garage remains in the property.
